Scott Beigel was a teacher. A cross-country coach. A counselor. A son. A brother. An uncle. A grandchild. A nephew. A cousin. A friend. He died a hero for his actions at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
Scott was a humble young man who never fully recognized the impact he had on others, especially children. In the wake of the tragedy at MSD, as the Parkland community mourned the devastation of so many lives lost and affected, Scott’s cross-country team quickly mobilized a 5K race in honor of their beloved coach and mentor.
This race has become an event uniting the Parkland community and beyond in remembrance and celebration of Scott and all of those affected.
Teaching, mentoring, guiding, and helping children of all ages was Scott’s personal mission. He loved working with children, and teaching afforded him the ability to continue with one of his life’s passions, working at sleep-away camp. He was a camper or camp counselor for 28 consecutive summers. He believed in fighting for the underdog and treating others the way he wanted to be treated.
The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund was established to keep Scott’s legacy of mentorship for children alive for the future. Funds raised through RUN 4 BEIGEL events support the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, whose mission is to send at-risk, underserved kids touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp.
The MSD Cross Country team held the first 5K in honor of their beloved coach only days after the shooting tragedy. They named the race RUN 4 BEIGEL and over a thousand people came together to honor the 17 lives lost on February 14, 2018.
RUN 4 BEIGEL now holds events in both South Florida and Long Island, NY, and has expanded to include 10K, 5K, and 1K run/walk events. The race has grown in both size and popularity and has become the race of choice for both serious athletes and general participants.
We had over 1,500 participants across two races in 2022 (spring and fall) which included in-person and virtual runners/walkers from across the world.
The 2022 Parkland event was the largest running event of its kind in Parkland history with over 800 runners/1,200 attendees (an 80% increase in participants over 2020) at the live event at Parkland Recreational Center Park.
The 2022 Long Island, NY event had over 600 runners/800 attendees (120% increase in participants over 2021) at the live event at Heckscher State Park.
The growth of the race expands the ability for the SJBMF to send at-risk, underserved kids touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp.
